How to schedule time to write

Maintaining Blog Series Momentum

I find it very easy to get distracted by the many elements of maintaining a blog and the allure of social media, to the point where I struggle to attend to the main element : create content.

Here’s how devoting specific time to writing can not only regain your momentum, but transform the trajectory of your blog.

The power of a writing routine

Establishing a writing routine isn’t just about discipline; it’s about creating space for creativity and productivity to flourish. Research suggests that routines can significantly reduce stress, improve focus and boost creativity. Adopting a consistent writing schedule not only helps run your blog more efficiently, but also nourishes your mental well-being.

I do this by setting aside time each day (usually at the same time each day) to write, but also setting aside longer times on a weekly basis (i.e. currently I’m trying to do Monday a “writing day”). I have also sometimes taken even longer periods of time to go away for the sole purpose of writing (i.e. for a weekend). I find that putting this time aside, away from distractions – and even away from being completely online – really improves the quality and style of my writing.

In fact, if you’re interested in my daily routine, here’s A Day in the Life of a ProBlogger (me).

Finding your best writing time

Not everyone’s peak creativity happens in the morning. Experiment by writing at different times to discover when you are most productive. Pay attention to your body’s natural rhythms: Your circadian rhythms play a crucial role in determining your most fertile times when it comes to creativity.

One thing I’ve already done to find my preferred writing times and different states of productivity is to keep a blog journal to analyze your blogging routine.

Set realistic goals

A writing session without a goal is like a ship without a compass. Set achievable goals for each session, whether it’s word count, post length, or number of posts. This clarity will guide your efforts and increase your sense of accomplishment.

What I do every day, even two or three times a day, is to critically analyze:

“What am I doing right now and is it worth it?” Are these three hours I just spent on social media bringing me closer to my goals – and it could – or is it taking them further away?

This type of questioning has become automatic in my daily work rhythm. By paying conscious attention to it, it becomes second nature. While this doesn’t always stop me from being distracted, it helps me stay focused.

Minimize distractions for maximum productivity

Distractions are the sworn enemy of productivity. In a world where every ping could lead down a rabbit hole, creating a distraction-free writing environment becomes crucial. Consider using social media blocking apps, establishing a designated writing space, or wearing noise-canceling headphones to stay focused on your writing.

Here are some articles from ProBlogger writers covering other ways to focus on writing amid distraction:
